In this newsletter, we want to share insights into the climate, investments, and the ecosystem we’re proud to be part of. This marks the beginning of a new channel for inspiration, and dialogue.

2024 warmest year on record in Europe

In 2024 Europe was the fastest-warming continent. I recently visited Svalbard, where the glaciers experienced their largest annual ice loss on record last year. Svalbard has become an involuntary laboratory for the consequences of global warming – a warning to the rest of the world. Climate change is progressing three times faster in Svalbard than elsewhere. Here, climate change is not a distant future – it’s a daily reality. The permafrost is thawing, landslides and floods are growing threats, and even the seed vault, known as Norway’s Doomsday Vault, has faced complications. At the same time, Svalbard is undergoing a critical energy transition following the shutdown of its coal power plant. Today, Longyearbyen is powered by a new diesel generator, a necessary interim solution to ensure energy security. But the green transition is underway. A new energy system is being developed, with the potential to integrate renewable energy sources. This shift is expected to reduce CO₂ emissions by 80 percent compared to the coal-powered past, a necessary response in a region already experiencing the dramatic impacts of a changing climate.

Climate tech is freedom tech

Climate change intensifies existing conflicts and creates new threats. At a time when the Nordic countries and Europe must take more responsibility for their own security, it is clear that climate technology is not just a climate measure – it is a strategic security investment. I believe Norway has both the capital and competence to accelerate the green transition and strengthen Europe’s strategic autonomy. In this context, Nysnø’s role as a long-term, stable investor is more important than ever. Europe faces an urgent investment need. Mobilizing both public and private capital is essential.

Transition now – for competitiveness and independence

Although climate change have taken up less space in public debate, the EU’s green direction remains firm. The Clean Industrial Deal, launched in February 2025, responds to the need for increased competitiveness and investments in climate technology. Europe faces a pressing demand for capital, and now both public and private forces are mobilizing. With a new EU strategy for start-ups and scale-ups in place, two important questions arise: How can Norway help strengthen a Europe we depend on? And how do we ensure that Norwegian solutions are part of the green industrial push? Norway is well-positioned, but lacks sufficient access to risk capital – a crucial enabler for growth. This weakens our ability to build the companies of tomorrow. That’s why a long-term perspective is essential – and why we must continue to invest across market cycles.

Why a newsletter – and why now?

At a time when both markets and the climate challenge us to rethink, it’s more important than ever to keep our eyes on the future. Going forward, it will be crucial to think long-term, continue seeking climate solutions, and explore synergies where they can also contribute to preventive security efforts. Through this newsletter, we want to share insights, progress, and reflections from our point in the green transition. As an early-stage investor, we know value creation doesn’t happen overnight, it takes time, and progress is gradual. The true value lies in what we’re building: companies, technologies, and a more resilient ecosystem for green innovation.

Thank you for being part of this journey. Together, we are shaping the future – starting now.

Warm regards,
Siri and the Nysnø team

If you’d like to receive newsletters from Nysnø Climate Investments, send your email address to elise@nysnoinvest.no.

If you no longer wish to receive newsletters from us, you can unsubscribe at any time via the link at the bottom of the newsletter.

Nysnø Climate Investments is launching our very first newsletter!
