Torghatten
Torghatten is one of Norway’s largest transport groups and operates routes for ferries, express boats and buses throughout the country.
An engine for a greener transport industry
Torghatten was founded in 1878 and is headquartered in Brønnøysund, Norway. The company has a strong focus on climate-friendly solutions with zero or low emissions and invest in future-proof climate technologies for green transportation. The company’s core business is in public transport by sea and land, and the group currently consists of a number of subsidiaries, including some of Norway’s largest ferry, express boat and bus companies.
In recent years, the group has established a clear environmental profile and ambitious sustainability strategy. Torghatten aims to take an active role in influencing various stakeholders to develop climate-friendly solutions with zero or low emissions in the transport industry, and ensure that the companies within the group make use of these technologies.
Torghatten recently built the world’s largest full electric car ferry, has ordered more than one hundred electric buses for use in big cities and invested in autonomous electric ferries.
Important focus area
Ferries and buses are critical infrastructure in Norway. Today, about a third of the national greenhouse gas emissions come from the transport sector. The government’s goal is to reduce these emissions by 50 percent by 2030, by, amongst other things, improving the public transport offering. With its comprehensive plans for green fleet renewal, including investments in battery and hydrogen technology, Torghatten will play a key role in fulfilling the ambition of offering accessible, climate-friendly and affordable public transport throughout the country.
There is no doubt that environmentally friendly transport solutions will make an important contribution to achieving Norway’s climate goals. Ferries and buses are well suited for electrification and calculations show that the transition to battery and hydrogen solutions on ferries and electric city buses can reduce emissions by more than 2.4 million tons of CO2 eq. from 2021 to 2030.
A display window for sustainable technology
Development of electric transport on land and at sea is strategically important for Norway. It stimulates activity along the coast, creates new opportunities, and strengths national expertise and know-how that is in demand globally.
A restructuring of the maritime industry can give Norway a global competitive advantage within zero-emission technology at sea. Norway is already a world-leader in green shipping and now, as the international shipping industry is looking to cut emissions, demand for such technologies and expertise will increase.
Torghatten is an ambitious driving force for sustainable solutions to be developed and used in the transport industry. As a leading stakeholder in the sector, they contribute to Norway being a display window for the application of zero- and low-emission technology in an international context, at the same time as they are spearheading a more environmentally friendly transport sector at home.
