Clean hydrogen with integrated carbon capture

The technology solves a key challenge related to hydrogen production: how to capture emission during the actual production process. The ZEG method ensures that CO2 is captured in an efficient and cost-efficient way, so it can be further stored or used.

The unique technology was developed over several years at the Institute for Energy Technology (IFE). ZEG Power is now in the process of establishing an industrial plant for daily production of 700 kg of hydrogen, which corresponds to 250 tons a year. With the future commercialization of a larger plant, ZEG Power will be able to meet the increasing demand for hydrogen from maritime and land-based transport.

Hydrogen with lower emissions is crucial

Demand for hydrogen is growing, especially from new markets within electricity, heating and transport systems worldwide.

Currently, hydrogen is mainly produced from natural gas without carbon capture and storage. But in order to reduce the climate footprint, it is crucial to find solutions that lower emissions. Hydrogen from natural gas with carbon capture and storage will be an important tool to accelerate the transition to emission-free transport and industry.

According to the EU’s new hydrogen strategy, 24 percent of the world energy demand could be met by hydrogen by 2050. In addition, it is estimated that it will be difficult to meet the global energy need and achieve the climate goals without hydrogen. There is no doubt that hydrogen is a key component in the energy systems of the future, and absolutely necessary to reduce global emissions, but it is crucial that it is produced in ways that lower CO2 emissions.

The energy carrier of the future

Hydrogen from natural gas with carbon capture and storage is considered one of the few methods that can become significant enough to really contribute in the fight against climate change. Hydrogen has enormous potential as fuel for heavy transport, ferries and ships and is considered one of the top alternatives to fossil fuels. If global heavy industry, such as steel production, also cuts coal and converts to hydrogen, it will have major positive impact on emissions.

By capturing CO2 during the production phase, ZEG Power’s technology offers both an efficient, cost-reducing and climate-friendly way of producing hydrogen. Speeding up the development of cleaner production methods is crucial to reduce emissions in hard-to-abate sectors, and ZEG Power’s technology is an important contribution.
