Investments for a strengthened global hydrogen economy
AP Ventures was established in 2018 and is headquartered in London. They focus on companies and technologies that address climate challenges and the UN Sustainable Development Goals, particularly regarding renewable energy, resource scarcity, and changing demographics. The fund has identified Norway as a strategic focus area, especially for green and blue hydrogen.
Through the AP Ventures Fund II, the British manager has already invested in a range of exciting companies and technologies with solutions for carbon capture and storage as well as CO2 utilization, including Nysnø’s portfolio company ZEG Power, which produces blue hydrogen with integrated carbon capture.
The energy carrier of the future
Hydrogen is considered an important energy carrier for achieving global climate goals. Bloomberg New Energy Finance estimates that hydrogen could meet 24 percent of global energy demand by 2050, up from 2 percent in 2020. Hydrogen is particularly important for cutting greenhouse gas emissions in sectors where direct electrification is challenging, such as industrial processes and long-distance transport.
All of AP Ventures’ portfolio companies use or enable the use of platinum group metals. These metals facilitate efficient chemical reactions in the production, storage, release, measurement, and use of hydrogen, and are considered a vital component for building a hydrogen economy with lower greenhouse gas emissions.
Access to larger markets
Thanks to access to hydropower, well-developed carbon capture technologies, and excellent utilization and storage opportunities, Norway has the potential to lead Europe into the transition to a sustainable hydrogen economy. Close cooperation with a recognized hydrogen-focused investment fund like AP Ventures provides valuable insight into well-developed knowledge and experience, and increases opportunities for co-investments as well as geographical diversification.
With its clear presence in Norway and connection to the global ecosystem, AP Ventures can help provide Norwegian companies with access to a larger global market, thereby also strengthening Norway’s position as a leading hydrogen economy internationally.
